What is Scriben?
Scriben is a real ballpoint pen that records in-person conversations and turns them into a searchable transcript, a structured summary and the follow-up work that comes out of them. It writes in 0.6mm ink while it captures. It records to its own 64GB — roughly 400 hours of audio — for up to 18 hours on a charge, with no phone, no app running and no network connection. The pen is $129 once. The software has a $0 Free plan, an optional $12.99 a month Pro plan, and custom Enterprise pricing.
How it works, end to end
01 / Press the clip
Recording starts on the device. Nothing has to be unlocked, opened, paired or connected, and there is no app in the foreground. Say what the pen is and get agreement first — that is the first step of the workflow, not a footnote to it.
02 / It records the room, and it writes
Audio goes to the pen’s own 64GB. Nothing is transmitted anywhere while you are in the conversation, because there is no connection open. Meanwhile it is a working ballpoint, which is the part people are usually surprised by.
03 / Sync when you choose
Connect to the Scriben app — iOS today, with no Android app yet — and the audio uploads and is processed into a diarised transcript and a structured summary — topics, decisions, action items. Until you do this, the recording exists in one place only.
04 / It becomes memory, not just a transcript
Across conversations, Scriben builds a private structured record of people, projects, decisions and open commitments, so the question you can ask is "what did she say about the renewal" rather than "which file was that in".
05 / And then it does the work
Approval-gated workflows draft the email, update the calendar and post to the tools you already use. Nothing is sent without your explicit approval. Compatible agents — Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Zed — can read your notes over MCP.

Otter, Fireflies, Fathom, Notta and Granola each require a virtual meeting or a running app to capture from — checked on 15 September 2026 against each vendor’s own product pages and documentation. All five offer mobile apps that can record in person from a phone; none captures a conversation with no session and no app running. If that changes, this page is wrong and we would like to be told.

Does Scriben work without internet?
Yes. Recording is entirely local to the pen and needs no connection. Processing into a transcript and summary happens after you sync, which you choose when to do.
How is Scriben different from Otter.ai or Fireflies?

How much does Scriben cost?
$129 once for the pen. Software is $0 a month on the Free plan, $12.99 a month for Pro, and custom for Enterprise. There is no transcription meter and no minutes allowance to run out of.
Do I have to tell people I am recording?
Yes, and the product is built on the assumption that you do. Say what the pen is and what it does, get agreement, and then it stays out of the way. Recording law varies by state — see recording people lawfully.
What do I need to use it?
The pen and the Scriben app, which is on iOS today. There is no Android app yet, so an Android-only user is not served — worth knowing before you buy, because syncing goes through the app. Recording itself needs nothing but the pen.
